For individuals with disabilities, finding meaningful employment is about more than earning a paycheck. It’s about independence, confidence, building relationships, and becoming an active part of the community. That’s why Vocational Rehabilitation programs across the country focus on helping individuals achieve Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE).
But what exactly does that mean?
What Is Competitive Integrated Employment?
Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE) is a job where a person with a disability:
- Earns wages that are comparable to employees performing similar work.
- Works alongside coworkers with and without disabilities.
- Has the same opportunities for advancement, promotions, and training.
- Receives the same workplace benefits and expectations as other employees.
- Is employed in a typical community business rather than in a segregated work setting.
Simply put, CIE means having the opportunity to work in the same types of jobs and workplaces as everyone else.
Why Competitive Integrated Employment Matters
Research consistently shows that employment provides benefits that extend far beyond income.
Meaningful work can:
- Increase self-confidence and independence
- Improve mental health and overall well-being
- Develop new skills and career opportunities
- Expand social connections
- Improve long-term financial stability
- Strengthen participation in the community
Employment also allows individuals to demonstrate their talents and abilities while helping employers build a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
Everyone’s Path Looks Different
No two individuals begin their employment journey with the same experience, interests, or support needs.
Some participants may already have previous work experience and only need assistance finding the right employer.
Others may benefit from learning workplace expectations, practicing job skills, or exploring different career paths before entering competitive employment.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach.
The goal is to identify each person’s strengths, interests, and support needs to develop an employment plan that leads to long-term success.
How ESS Helps Individuals Prepare for Employment
Employment Support Services (ESS) partners with Nevada Vocational Rehabilitation to help participants build the skills and experience needed for Competitive Integrated Employment.
Depending on an individual’s needs, services may include:
Career Readiness Workshops
Participants develop essential workplace skills including:
- Communication
- Interview preparation
- Professional behavior
- Resume development
- Workplace expectations
- Customer service
- Teamwork
- Problem solving
These foundational skills help participants feel confident before beginning employment.
Community Work Experience (CWE)
A Community Work Experience allows participants to gain hands-on experience in real businesses while receiving guidance and support from an Employment Specialist.
Participants can explore different industries, build confidence, and develop practical workplace skills in a supportive environment.
Community-Based Assessment (CBA)
A Community-Based Assessment helps determine an individual’s work strengths, interests, and support needs through observation in an actual work environment.
This information helps Vocational Rehabilitation and the participant identify the types of employment that are the best long-term fit.
Job Development
Once participants are ready for employment, ESS assists with:
- Identifying job opportunities
- Connecting with employers
- Preparing for interviews
- Applying for positions
- Matching career goals with available openings
The focus is on finding employment that aligns with each participant’s interests, abilities, and long-term goals.
Job Coaching
After employment begins, some individuals may benefit from temporary job coaching to help them adjust to their new workplace.
Support may include learning job tasks, developing workplace routines, improving communication, and building independence until additional support is no longer needed.
How Employers Benefit
Competitive Integrated Employment also benefits employers.
Businesses that hire individuals with disabilities often report:
- Higher employee retention
- Strong workplace morale
- Diverse perspectives
- Dedicated and reliable employees
- Access to workforce support programs
- Assistance from employment professionals throughout the hiring process
ESS works directly with employers to identify qualified candidates and provide ongoing support when needed.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
Competitive Integrated Employment is about creating opportunities for individuals to succeed in meaningful careers while helping employers discover talented, motivated employees.
